Who qualifies for the program?
Whether you own or rent, live in a single-family, multi-family, or a mobile home, you can apply for assistance.
If someone in your household receives Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), or participates in the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP), you are automatically eligible.
You may also be eligible for assistance if your income falls within the federally-established income guidelines. Click here for the income guidelines.
Are certain persons given priority based upon special needs?
Preference is given to persons over 59 years of age, persons with disabilities, and families with children under age six.
How is it determined what types of repairs will be done to my home?
After performing a computerized energy audit, a trained inspector will determine the best energy conservation measures for your home based on your heating needs. The inspector will meet with you to explain how the weatherization crew will conduct the work. You should ask any questions you have at this time about the work to be done.
What types of repairs will be done?
Some typical weatherization work that may be done to your home includes:
- tuning up, repairing or replacing the furnace or heating unit
- insulating vulnerable areas to stop air leaks
- stopping air leaks by weather-stripping and caulking around doors and windows
- replacing broken glass panes
We will also provide:
- energy-related health and safety issues while conducting work
- instructions on the care of weatherization materials and simple or low-cost or no-cost tips on how to save even more energy and money after the weatherization materials have been installed
What is the cost?
If you are a person with lower income and you are looking for a way to reduce your home energy bills, the Weatherization Assistance Program may help by weatherizing your home free of charge. Funding for this program is provided by the Nebraska Energy Office, the US Department of Energy and the Federal Low Income Energy Assistance Program.
